Alien Nightmare

Alien Nightmare

Had a dream the other night
Dreamt I was alone
On some long dead alien world
Searching for a phone

Gnarled trees and death-gray stones
In a moon-laced atmosphere
I ran, I stopped, I cried, I dropped
I wished I had a beer

A blinding flash of rainbow light
A lungless breath I took
I was far too scared to say a word
While this exotic place still shook

An intergalactic warrior
From a distant universe
Stood standing in some ruins
Babbling poetic verse

At first he didn’t see me
Near a timed-stained, crumbling well
But his attention was diverted
When I accidentally fell

He rushed across the lichen covered
Extraterrestrial sand
And smiling up a smile
Offered up his hand

By John H Thomas Jr

I grasped the proffered foreign hand
And he helped me to arise
His grip was strong, his manner mild
Tranquility danced in his eyes

I only wished Flash Gordon
Or some star born space cadet
Could offer up suggestions
On alien etiquette

But all my fears were set aside
When it suddenly occurred to me
That I was still the master
Of my nocturnal imagery

So with a little mental juggling
And some mental variations
I found that I could fast become
The alien’s duplication

Now each night the two of us
In light speed ships of war
Go searching for adventure
And new galaxies to explore
